1. What does the Child Care Calculator do?
The Child Care Calculator estimates what help you could get with childcare costs and parental leave in the UK.
It combines government rules on maternity and paternity pay, shared parental leave, Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit childcare support, and free childcare hours.
It provides estimates based on official GOV.UK information — not legal or financial advice.
2. What information do I need to use it?
To get accurate results, you’ll need:
- Your child’s date of birth (or expected due date)
- Number of children and whether any are disabled
- Household income (yours and your partner’s, if applicable)
- Employment status (employed, self-employed, or unemployed)
- Average weekly or monthly earnings
- Whether you or your partner claim Universal Credit or childcare vouchers
- Typical weekly childcare hours or costs
3. How are maternity and paternity pay calculated?
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is usually:
- 90% of your average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks, then
- The statutory weekly rate (or 90% of your average earnings, whichever is lower) for up to 33 more weeks.
Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) is up to 2 weeks at either the statutory rate or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower).
Some employers offer enhanced maternity or paternity pay, so always check your company policy.
4. Can I share leave and pay with my partner?
Yes. Under Shared Parental Leave and Pay (SPL/ShPP), eligible parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay in the baby’s first year.
You can take time off together or separately, depending on what works best for your family.
The calculator can show how splitting the leave affects your total income.
5. What is Tax-Free Childcare?
Tax-Free Childcare helps working parents with the cost of approved childcare.
For every £8 you pay into your online childcare account, the government adds £2 — up to £2,000 per child per year (or £4,000 if your child is disabled).
It’s available for children under 12 (or under 17 if disabled), provided you meet the income and work requirements.

6. What if I get Universal Credit?
If you receive Universal Credit, you may be able to claim back up to 85% of your childcare costs, up to the monthly maximum set by the government.
However, you cannot receive both Universal Credit childcare support and Tax-Free Childcare at the same time.
7. Are free childcare hours included in the calculator?
Yes. The calculator estimates how many free childcare hours you may be entitled to.
In England, working parents can get:
- 15 hours of free childcare per week for children aged 2–4
- 30 hours for eligible working families with children aged 3–4
- Extended free hours for children aged 9 months to 4 years (phased rollout 2024–2025)
8. Can self-employed parents use the calculator?
Yes. Self-employed parents can use the calculator to estimate eligibility for Maternity Allowance, Tax-Free Childcare, or free childcare hours.
Maternity Allowance is paid for up to 39 weeks if you do not qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay.
9. Does the calculator cover adoption or surrogacy?
Yes. The same statutory rules apply to Adoption Leave and Pay and to parents using surrogacy arrangements, though eligibility dates may differ.
You can use the calculator to estimate pay and leave based on your child’s placement date.
10. Is the calculator legally binding or official?
No — this tool provides estimates only.
It uses the latest official rates and eligibility criteria from GOV.UK, but your actual entitlement may vary depending on your personal situation and your employer’s policy.
Always confirm details through official channels or with your HR department.
11. How often is the calculator updated?
The calculator should be updated every April (the start of the UK tax year) or when government childcare and leave rates change.
You can always check the official pages for current figures on pay rates and free childcare hours.
