Childcare Savings Calculator for Parents

Childcare Savings Calculator

Estimate how much a childcare support scheme could reduce your annual childcare cost.

Used for the Tax-Free Childcare annual cap.

Estimate only. Actual support depends on your eligibility, childcare provider, approved costs, funded-hour availability and scheme rules.

What Is the Childcare Savings Calculator for Parents?

The Childcare Savings Calculator for Parents estimates how one selected support scheme could reduce a family’s childcare cost. UK parents can compare their annual childcare spending with an estimated saving from Tax-Free Childcare, 30 Hours Free Childcare or Universal Credit childcare.

The calculator shows the estimated annual and monthly saving, percentage cost reduction and remaining annual cost. It helps families manage childcare costs efficiently and make informed decisions for short-term and long-term needs. It is useful for preparing a childcare budget, but it does not approve government support, track contributions or monitor payments.

How to Use the Childcare Savings Calculator

1. Enter Your Monthly Childcare Cost

Add the total amount currently paid each month. Use eligible childcare costs when estimating a specific scheme. The calculator multiplies this figure by 12 to produce the annual childcare cost.

For a more detailed breakdown of hours, fees and extras, use the Childcare Cost Calculator UK.

2. Enter the Number of Eligible Children

Enter between 1 and 20 children. Use only children relevant to the selected scheme. The number affects Tax-Free Childcare caps, the estimated value of funded hours and whether the one-child or multiple-child Universal Credit cap is used.

3. Add the Number of Disabled Children

This field is used when calculating the Tax-Free Childcare annual cap. The number cannot exceed the total eligible children. The tool allows a £2,000 annual top-up cap for each standard child and £4,000 for each disabled child.

4. Select One Support Scheme

Choose Tax-Free Childcare, 30 Hours Free Childcare or Universal Credit childcare. The calculator estimates one scheme at a time; it does not combine them into a single entitlement result.

Selecting 30 Hours Free Childcare reveals an extra field for the average hourly childcare rate. Enter the relevant provider rate so the calculator can estimate the monetary value of funded hours.

How Are Childcare Savings Calculated?

The starting formula is:

Annual childcare cost = monthly childcare cost × 12

Tax-Free Childcare Estimate

The calculator estimates support as 20% of annual childcare cost, limited by the combined per-child caps:

Estimated support = lower of annual cost × 20% or total annual top-up cap

Tax-Free Childcare is different from childcare vouchers or employer-provided vouchers. Use the Tax-Free Childcare Calculator UK when you need a dedicated childcare account calculation. Although terms such as childcare account calculator, online child account calculator and childcare tax account calculator are sometimes used, this savings tool does not manage an actual account.

Existing voucher members can estimate salary-sacrifice savings with the Childcare Voucher Calculator. Voucher tax and National Insurance savings should not be added to a Tax-Free Childcare estimate.

30 Hours Free Childcare Estimate

For this option, the calculator uses:

Estimated funded value = 30 hours × 38 weeks × hourly rate × eligible children

Support is limited to the entered annual childcare cost. This is an England-based estimate for eligible working parents; actual funded-hour availability, start dates, provider delivery and optional charges can differ. The childcare funding calculator provides a separate view of funding options and government funding eligibility.

Universal Credit Childcare Estimate

The calculator estimates up to 85% of annual childcare costs. It then applies a monthly maximum of £1,071.09 for one child or £1,836.16 for two or more children, multiplied by 12.

Use the Universal Credit Childcare Calculator UK for a dedicated estimate. Universal Credit childcare and Tax-Free Childcare cannot be claimed together.

Childcare Savings Calculation Example

Suppose a family enters:

  • Monthly childcare cost: £800
  • Eligible children: 2
  • Disabled children: 0
  • Selected scheme: Tax-Free Childcare

The annual childcare cost is:

£800 × 12 = £9,600

The 20% estimated saving is:

£9,600 × 20% = £1,920

The combined cap for two standard children is £4,000, so the £1,920 estimate remains below the cap.

The calculator therefore displays:

  • Estimated annual saving: £1,920
  • Estimated monthly saving: £160
  • Estimated cost reduction: 20%
  • Estimated remaining annual cost: £7,680

These results exactly match the calculator’s formula. They remain estimates because actual support depends on eligibility, approved childcare costs and scheme rules.

How to Compare the Available Support

Do not assume the scheme showing the largest estimate is automatically available. First check employment, income, child age, provider and reporting requirements. Consider the timing of payments as well as the annual total.

The Childcare Cost Comparison Calculator UK helps compare two providers after confirmed funded hours and extras. For broader long-term family planning, use the Cost of Raising a Child Calculator UK.

This calculator helps estimate potential savings and organise available support, childcare assistance programs and childcare spending. It does not replace formal childcare support, financial support or official advice. It also cannot guarantee personal data safety on external application services; always use the official service when submitting sensitive information.

FAQs

Q1: What can I calculate with this tool?

A: You can estimate annual and monthly savings from one selected childcare support scheme and see the estimated remaining childcare cost.

Q2: Does the calculator check funding eligibility?

A: No. It uses the details entered without approving funding options, childcare benefits or employer benefits. Check eligibility separately on GOV.UK.

A: No. Select one scheme and run separate estimates. Tax-Free Childcare cannot be claimed at the same time as Universal Credit childcare or childcare vouchers.

Q4: Does the calculator track childcare payments?

A: No. It does not connect to a childcare account, track contributions or store payment history.

Q5: Why does the 30 Hours option ask for an hourly rate?

A: The calculator multiplies the entered rate by up to 30 funded hours, 38 weeks and the number of eligible children to estimate a value.

Q6: Can it replace official or professional advice?

A: No. Use the result for initial budgeting and confirm available support, childcare schemes and approved costs through the relevant official service.
