What Is a Universal Credit Childcare Calculator UK?

A Universal Credit Childcare Calculator UK estimates the childcare element that may be included in a Universal Credit payment for one assessment period. It calculates 85% of eligible childcare costs and then applies the maximum for one child or for two or more children.

For 2026/27, the calculator uses a maximum of £1,071.09 per assessment period for one child and £1,836.16 for two or more children. It also shows the entered cost, 85% before the cap and the amount not covered by this estimate.

The result is not a complete Universal Credit calculation. Earnings, capital, other elements, deductions, sanctions and the benefit cap can change the final payment. Visit the homepage when a different childcare calculation is needed.

How to Use the Universal Credit Childcare Calculator

1. Select the Number of Children in Paid Childcare

Choose either one child or two or more children. This selection determines which assessment-period maximum the calculator applies.

Choose two or more only when eligible childcare costs for at least two children are included in the entered amount. The tool does not request separate costs, ages or providers for each child.

Parents caring for a disabled child may also need to review other support separately. The Disabled Childcare Allowance Calculator UK covers a different scheme and should not be added automatically to this result.

2. Enter Eligible Childcare Costs

Enter the childcare costs already paid that relate to one Universal Credit assessment period. The amount must be greater than £0.

Use costs for registered or approved childcare that satisfy Universal Credit rules. Do not enter an annual bill, a future unpaid quotation or costs covering several assessment periods as though they belonged to one period.

If you need to calculate the underlying nursery fee first, use the Nursery Fees Calculator with Free Hours UK, then identify the eligible amount actually paid for the relevant period.

3. Calculate and Review the Estimate

Select Calculate. The main result is the estimated childcare element before overall Universal Credit deductions. The calculator also displays:

  • Eligible childcare cost entered
  • 85% of that cost before the maximum
  • Applicable assessment-period maximum
  • Cost not covered by this estimate

Reset clears both inputs and allows another assessment period or childcare arrangement to be tested.

How Is Universal Credit Childcare Support Calculated?

The calculation begins with:

Support before cap = Eligible childcare cost × 85%

The calculator then compares that amount with the relevant maximum:

  • One child: £1,071.09
  • Two or more children: £1,836.16

The estimated childcare element is:

Lower of 85% of eligible costs or the applicable maximum

The cost not covered is:

Eligible childcare cost − Estimated childcare element

The uncovered figure is not always exactly 15% because the maximum may restrict support when costs are high.

The Childcare Funding Calculator UK can help families review other funding routes, but confirmed support should be kept separate to avoid counting the same childcare cost twice.

Universal Credit Childcare Calculation Example

Suppose a parent enters:

  • Number of children in paid childcare: two or more
  • Eligible childcare cost for one assessment period: £2,400

The calculator first calculates 85%:

£2,400 × 85% = £2,040

The maximum for two or more children is £1,836.16. Because £2,040 is higher than the maximum, the estimate is capped:

Estimated childcare element = £1,836.16

The amount not covered is:

£2,400 − £1,836.16 = £563.84

The result panel therefore displays:

  • Eligible childcare cost: £2,400
  • 85% before the cap: £2,040
  • Assessment-period maximum: £1,836.16
  • Estimated childcare element: £1,836.16
  • Cost not covered: £563.84

These figures match the calculator’s programmed calculation. They do not guarantee that £1,836.16 will be added to the claimant’s final Universal Credit payment.

What the Result Does Not Include

The calculator does not check whether the claimant or partner is working, whether the provider is approved, when the bill was paid or whether costs were reported on time. It also does not request earnings, savings, housing costs or other Universal Credit details.

The final award may be lower after earnings and other deductions are considered. A zero or reduced overall Universal Credit payment can therefore differ from the childcare-element estimate displayed here.

Child Benefit is separate. Families can estimate that payment using the Child Benefit Calculator UK without subtracting it from the childcare cost field on this page.

Comparing Universal Credit with Other Childcare Support

Universal Credit childcare support is not the same as Tax-Free Childcare. A claimant generally cannot receive both schemes at the same time. Before changing schemes, compare the wider effect on the household rather than looking only at the headline percentage.

The Tax-Free Childcare Calculator UK estimates a government account top-up, while this tool estimates reimbursement of eligible paid childcare costs through Universal Credit.

The Childcare Savings Calculator for Parents can support wider budgeting, but it does not replace an official benefit calculation. Keep invoices, receipts, provider details and payment evidence available when reporting costs.

FAQs

Q1: How much childcare cost can Universal Credit cover?

A: The calculator estimates up to 85% of eligible costs, subject to £1,071.09 for one child or £1,836.16 for two or more children per assessment period.

Q2: Should I enter monthly or annual childcare costs?

A: Enter eligible costs already paid for childcare relating to one Universal Credit assessment period, not an annual total.

Q3: Does the calculator check Universal Credit eligibility?

A: No. It only applies the 85% calculation and maximum. It does not check work, provider, evidence, income or capital rules.

Q4: Where can I check the official childcare rules?

A: Review GOV.UK for eligibility, reporting deadlines, evidence and current maximum amounts.

Q5: Can I claim Tax-Free Childcare at the same time?

A: Universal Credit and Tax-Free Childcare cannot normally be received together. Check the effect of switching before ending existing support.

Q6: Why might my final Universal Credit payment be lower?

A: The calculator shows the childcare element before the wider Universal Credit calculation. Earnings and other deductions may reduce the final payment.
